GYPT – CRISIS – TOURISM – ANIMAL PROTECTION

Child walks in an animal cemetery from Giza/Cairo, on February 27, 2011. Egypt faces the most severe lack of tourists in the history of the country, after the resignation of President Mubarak. If the number of tourists exceeded 1 million between January and February 2010 (around 15,000 tourists per day), this year’s figures indicate only a few hundred of persons per day. In the pyramids area, around 8,000 Egyptians survive from tourism by using their animals. Unofficial statistics showed that around 350 animals died in two weeks, due to illnesses or lack of food, because their owners had no money to take care of them. The Vier Pfoten animal protection foundation started a medical assistance project to help the horses and camels used in Cairo’s tourism industry.
